The YF-4E tested fly by wire technologies in the 1970s as well as handling improvements. Among these were leading edge slats and canards.

Interesting, it's got an RF-4C nose. The slats did great things for the USAF's Phantoms. Didn't much help NAVAIR's F-4S around the boat though.

Actually just went back and checked one of my Phantom books. It was an RF-4C prototype.
